In a powerful speech in Hartford, former President Barack Obama warned that the U.S. is “dangerously close” to slipping into autocracy — not because of foreign enemies, but from within. He cited growing attacks on the press, institutions, and truth itself as signs of “the slow normalization of authoritarian behavior.”
“Freedom doesn’t disappear overnight,” Obama said. “It erodes quietly — law by law, lie by lie — until one day you wake up free only to agree.”
He urged citizens to defend democratic values, vote, and hold leaders accountable: “The future isn’t written yet. But if democracy falls here, the whole world will feel it.”
