Donald Trump has once again sparked debate after announcing that nearly every U.S. citizen could soon receive a $2,000 “dividend,” supposedly funded by revenue from tariffs.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that tariff income has filled government coffers with “trillions,” promising that money would go toward paying Americans and reducing the national debt.
However, economists say the math doesn’t work. Tariffs have brought in about $90 billion, while the plan could cost $300–500 billion. “You can’t hand out hundreds of billions based on a funding source that doesn’t exist,” said economist Ben Henry from Brookings.
Legal experts also note that several courts have already challenged Trump’s authority to redirect tariff revenue, meaning the plan could collapse if the Supreme Court rules against him.
